Most failing walls aren’t a material problem – they’re a drainage and engineering problem. When water builds up behind a wall with nowhere to go, hydrostatic pressure pushes it out of plumb until it leans, bulges, or cracks. We design every wall to relieve that pressure with proper base preparation, backfill, and integrated drainage.

In our Pacific Northwest climate, that pressure never really lets up. Months of steady rain keep the soil behind a wall saturated and heavy, and every freeze-thaw cycle expands and contracts the ground, working the wall loose a little more each season. A wall that looks solid in late summer can start leaning by spring – not because the block or stone failed, but because the water behind it had nowhere to escape.

Just as often, the weakness was built in from day one. Walls poured on unprepared ground, backfilled with dense native soil instead of free-draining gravel, or built without weep holes and a properly sized footing are all living on borrowed time. That’s why we never just patch the visible damage – we correct the base, drainage, and reinforcement underneath, so the same failure doesn’t come back a few winters later.

No guesswork. We specify the wall system, base depth, reinforcement, and the drainage plan (gravel backfill and weep holes) in writing — so you know what holds the wall up, not just what it looks like.

Execute the Repair

Our crews build on a compacted, well-drained base with proper batter and reinforcement. For repairs, we rebuild or stabilize the failing section and correct the underlying drainage that caused the problem.

A retaining wall protects your landscape, foundation, and safety. Here are straight answers to the questions we hear most.

Why is my retaining wall leaning or bulging?

It’s almost always water. When drainage fails, water collects behind the wall and hydrostatic pressure pushes it outward. We correct the drainage and rebuild or stabilize the wall so it doesn’t happen again.

Can you repair a wall, or does it need full replacement?

It depends on the cause and extent of the failure. A localized issue can often be rebuilt in sections, while a wall failing along its length usually needs replacement. We’ll tell you honestly after assessing it.

What materials do you build with?

We build with engineered block, natural stone, and poured concrete depending on the height, load, and look you want. Every option is spec’d for the load it must hold and the Washington climate.

Do I really need drainage behind the wall?

Yes — drainage is what keeps a wall standing. We integrate gravel backfill and weep holes (or a drain pipe) so water escapes instead of building pressure behind the wall.

Do you handle engineering and permits for taller walls?

Walls above a certain height often require engineering and permits. We’ll let you know when that applies and handle the structural details so your wall is built to code.
