Stone Repair

Stone Repair in the Seattle Area, WA.

Stone does not fail the way brick does. Units release from the bed, cultured stone delaminates off its backing, and there are no uniform courses to work to. We repair both natural and cultured stone.

Stone Behaves Differently

The Unit Rarely Breaks. The Bond Does.

Natural stone is harder and far less absorbent than brick, so it almost never spalls. What fails on a stone wall or chimney is the bond and the bedding: a stone works loose and can be moved by hand, a mortar bed behind a flat stone has washed out and left a void, or the joints have opened enough that water runs behind the face and starts taking the bed with it. The stone you are looking at is usually fine. What was holding it is not.

Cultured stone – manufactured stone veneer – fails in its own way, and it is worth knowing which you have. It is a cast concrete product with a decorative face, and when water gets behind it, it comes away in sheets rather than loosening unit by unit. The failure is normally at the installation, not the product: no weather-resistive barrier behind it, no weep screed at the bottom to let water out, or the stone run down into the ground where it wicks moisture permanently.

Repairing stone is slower work than brick because nothing is modular. Each stone has one orientation where it sits right, the joint widths are irregular by design, and a repointed section done to a uniform joint width announces itself from the street forever. We reset loose stone into a sound bed, rebuild washed-out beds behind flat stone, replace what has actually broken, and point to match the existing joint profile and colour rather than to a neat line.

How We Work

How We Repair Stone

Identify what you have, find where the water goes, then reset to a sound bed.

Full system inspection

We establish first whether the stone is natural or cultured, because they fail and get repaired differently, then sound the face for loose units and voids and look at where water is entering and whether it has any way out.

01

Define the Scope

You get the loose and failed stone identified, the condition of the bedding and any barrier behind it stated, and the pointing approach set out - including how we will match the existing joints.

02

Execute the Repair

Loose stone lifted, the bed cleaned back and rebuilt, units reset in their correct orientation, broken stone replaced with matched material, and joints pointed to the existing profile and colour.

03

Verify & Document

We check every reset stone for bond, confirm water has a route out at the base where the detail allows it, and photograph the repair so the matched joints can be compared against the original wall.

Why Chimneyz

Matching Is the Whole Job

A stone repair is judged entirely on whether you can see it. That comes down to sourcing the right material and matching the mortar tint and joint profile, which is the same discipline we apply to historic chimney work. We carry both natural and cultured stone work, and we will tell you which your wall is before we quote it, because the repair is not the same job.

FAQ

Stone Repair FAQ

Natural and cultured stone look similar on a wall and fail completely differently. Start here.
Cultured stone is cast, so units repeat – look for the same shape twice on a wall – and it is flat on the back and lighter. Natural stone has no repeats and real depth. We confirm it on site before quoting.
Usually yes, and resetting the original is better than replacing it, because it already matches. We lift it, clean the bed back to sound material, rebuild the bed and set the stone back in its original orientation.
Because water got behind it and had nowhere to drain. That is almost always a missing weather barrier or weep screed at the installation, so the repair has to correct the assembly, not just re-stick the face.
Often, from salvage or a current quarry match. Where an exact match genuinely is not available we will say so and discuss relocating sound stone from a less visible elevation into the repair instead.
Not if it is done properly. Stone joints are irregular widths by design, so we match the existing profile and tint the mortar to the wall. A section pointed to a uniform joint width is the giveaway.
