Wood Siding

Wood Siding in the Seattle Area, WA.

Nothing else looks like real cedar, and nothing else asks as much of you. We install, restore and maintain wood siding for homeowners who want the material and understand the commitment.

The Material and the Commitment

Real Wood Rewards Maintenance and Punishes Neglect.

Western red cedar is a Pacific Northwest material in the most literal sense, and on the right house nothing substitutes for it. It takes stain beautifully, it can be milled to profiles no manufactured product offers, and on a craftsman or a mid-century home it is often the only honest choice. It is also the one cladding on this list that is actively attacked by the climate it sits in.

Wood siding in this region needs a maintained finish, and the interval is shorter than homeowners expect. It needs the clearances other cladding needs, and it is less forgiving when it does not get them, because the consequence is rot rather than staining. North elevations under trees need more attention than south ones. Gutters that overflow onto a wood wall will destroy it in a few seasons.

Where wood siding is worth it, it is very much worth it, and a great deal of the wood cladding we see can be restored rather than replaced. Rotted boards and trim come out, sound material stays, the wall behind gets corrected, and the finish is brought back. Where it is past restoring, we are straight about that too, and about what it will ask of you if you put it back.

How We Work

How We Work With Wood

With wood the finish and the clearances are not maintenance items, they are the whole system.

Full system inspection

We separate sound wood from failed wood, which is more of it than it looks, and find what is wetting the failed areas: finish, clearance, gutters, flashing or a roof detail above.

01

Define the Scope

The scope sets out what gets replaced, what gets restored, the species and profile for any new material, and the finish and realistic maintenance interval for your exposures.

02

Execute the Repair

Failed boards and trim removed, any rot behind them addressed, barrier and flashing corrected, new material matched to profile and species, then the finish applied to a properly prepared surface.

03

Verify & Document

We confirm clearances at grade, roof and deck, check that roof drainage no longer lands on the wall, and leave you with a written maintenance interval rather than a vague suggestion.

Why Chimneyz

We Know What Kills Wood Here

Rotted cedar is a symptom, and the cause is nearly always water arriving from somewhere it should not: an overflowing gutter, a missing kick-out flashing, siding buried in the grade, a chimney shedding onto a wall. We fix those at the source because we work on all of them, which is why our wood repairs do not come back in three years.

FAQ

Wood Siding FAQ

Wood is the most rewarding and least forgiving cladding here. These questions decide whether it suits you.
More often than most homeowners plan for, and it varies sharply by elevation and exposure. A sheltered south wall and a north wall under trees are on completely different schedules; we give you both.
Frequently, yes. Rot is usually concentrated at bottom courses, around openings and wherever water is being delivered. Sound boards elsewhere can stay, which makes restoration far cheaper than a full re-clad.
No, but it is a commitment. Wood performs well here when the finish is maintained, clearances are right and roof water goes where it should. Neglect any of those and it fails faster than anything else on this list.
Yes, and many homeowners do precisely to end the maintenance cycle. It is a full replacement rather than a cover-over, and it is a good moment to correct the barrier and flashing while the wall is open.
Usually clearance. Boards running into the grade, a deck or a roof surface wick water upward continuously. The fix is correcting the clearance and the drainage, not simply replacing the board.
