Vinyl Siding

Vinyl Siding in the Seattle Area, WA.

Vinyl is the lowest-maintenance, lowest-cost cladding on this list, and it is the one most often installed badly. Done properly it performs. We will tell you honestly where it fits and where it does not.

What Vinyl Does Well

The Honest Case For and Against Vinyl.

Vinyl does not rot, does not need painting and costs less installed than anything else here. On rentals, on budget-constrained projects and on homes where appearance is not the driver, it is a sensible choice, and in a wet climate a cladding that is indifferent to moisture has a real argument in its favor.

The trade-offs are equally real. It does not look like wood or fiber cement and nobody is fooled. It is brittle in cold and can crack on impact. Color fades with exposure, and faded panels cannot be repainted into matching. It adds less at resale than fiber cement. Where homeowners get genuinely burned is assuming vinyl is maintenance-free in the sense of attention-free: it still needs the wall behind it to be built correctly.

That is the real issue. Because vinyl is cheap and quick, it is frequently hung by crews who treat it as a cover rather than as cladding, often straight over failing siding, with no barrier, no drainage plane and no flashing. Vinyl is not a waterproof layer. Water gets behind it by design and has to be able to leave. Hung over a wall with no way out, it hides rot for a decade. Most of the catastrophic wall damage we open up is behind vinyl.

How We Work

How We Install Vinyl

The material is cheap and fast, which is exactly why the wall behind it gets the same scrutiny as any other job.

Full system inspection

We inspect the wall going behind it rather than treating vinyl as a cover. If there is existing damage or failing cladding, that is dealt with first, not hidden.

01

Define the Scope

You get the product grade, profile, barrier and drainage detail and flashing schedule in writing, plus a straight comparison against fiber cement for your house before you commit.

02

Execute the Repair

Weather barrier and drainage plane, flashing at every opening and junction, then panels hung with the correct expansion allowance so they do not buckle in summer or crack in winter.

03

Verify & Document

We check that panels are hung loose enough to move, that water behind them has a route out at the base, and photograph the barrier and flashing before the panels cover them.

FAQ

Vinyl Siding FAQ

Vinyl is the most misunderstood cladding on this list. These are the questions worth asking.
No. It is indifferent to moisture, which counts for a lot here. The problem is almost never the vinyl itself, it is being installed as a cover over a wall that was never built to drain.
It physically can and we do not recommend it. Covering failing cladding hides rot, prevents a proper barrier and drainage plane, and turns a repairable wall into a structural job years later.
Almost always fastening. Vinyl expands and contracts significantly, and panels nailed tight cannot move, so they buckle in heat. It is an installation fault, not a product fault.
There are coatings marketed for it and the results are inconsistent, particularly on dark colors and south elevations. For a house you intend to keep, replacement usually serves better than painting.
Vinyl is meaningfully cheaper installed. Fiber cement costs more up front and returns it in appearance, impact resistance and resale. We put both numbers in front of you for your actual walls.
