Wood Rot Repair

Wood Rot Repair in the Seattle Area, WA.

Soft trim, crumbling fascia, a window sill you can push a screwdriver into. We cut out rotted wood, replace it properly, and stop the water that is feeding it.

Where Rot Starts

Rot Is Not a Material Problem. It Is a Water Problem.

Wood rot is a fungus, and it needs sustained moisture to live. In a climate where exterior wood can stay damp for months, the only thing standing between your trim and decay is that water keeps leaving. Where it stops leaving, rot follows, and it is always the same handful of places.

Window and door trim where the head flashing is missing or the caulk has given up. Fascia behind a gutter that overflows every heavy rain. Soffit where roof ventilation is pushing moist air into a cold cavity. Deck ledgers and posts at the point they meet something that holds water. Siding bottom courses sitting in the grade. Rake boards and corner trim on the elevation that takes the weather.

The repair itself is straightforward: cut back to sound wood, which is further than it looks because rot travels along the grain ahead of the visible damage, replace with properly primed and sealed material, and finish it. What makes it last is the other half of the job. If the gutter still overflows onto that fascia, the new board is on the same schedule as the old one.

How We Work

How We Repair Rot

Find the water, cut back past the damage, replace with sealed material, correct the cause. In that order.

Full system inspection

We probe rather than look. Rot extends well past what is visible, so we establish the real boundary and identify the water source feeding each area before quoting anything.

01

Define the Scope

The scope lists each rotted component, how far back it will be cut, the replacement material, and the drainage or flashing correction that stops it recurring.

02

Execute the Repair

Rotted material cut back to sound wood, replaced with primed and sealed stock, end grain treated, then the flashing, gutter or clearance that caused it corrected.

03

Verify & Document

We confirm the water now goes somewhere else, check that nothing adjacent was left borderline, and photograph the extent of what was removed.

Why Chimneyz

We Fix the Gutter, Not Just the Fascia

Rot repair done by a carpenter replaces the board. Done properly it also corrects the overflowing gutter, the missing kick-out flashing or the chimney detail that is delivering water to that spot. We work on all of those, so the repair is the end of the problem rather than the start of a cycle.

FAQ

Wood Rot Repair FAQ

Rot is the most common exterior repair in this region, and the most commonly repeated. Here is why.
Epoxy fillers have a place on small, non-structural areas of decorative trim. On anything carrying load or more than superficially affected, filling is cosmetic and the decay continues behind it.
Because the water is still arriving. An overflowing gutter, missing flashing or siding buried in the grade will destroy a new board as surely as the old one. The correction matters more than the carpentry.
Past the visible damage, always. Rot runs along the grain ahead of what you can see, so stopping at the soft area leaves active decay in the wall. We cut to clean, sound material and show you the line.
It becomes one. Trim and fascia are not structural, but rot that reaches sheathing, studs, rim joist or a deck ledger is, and a deck ledger in particular is a genuine safety issue.
Press it. Sound wood resists a screwdriver; rot gives. Check window sills, trim bottoms, fascia behind gutters and the lowest siding course every autumn before the wet season sets in.
